Dormitories
PHOTOGRAPHER (Copyright): Herve GOUBAND (ALISA Production)
The T3 ARCHITECTS team was invited by Hippo Farm to design dormitories to accommodate “green classes”, students and families who wish to learn more about nature, permaculture, horse riding, sustainable construction and all the meaningful activities to reconnect with what is essential: education , teamwork , sharing enriching moments with friends and reconnecting with the natural environment .
The building must reflect all these ideas to be in line with the Hippo Farm concept.
T3 decided to first propose a bioclimatic design , playing with the orientation of the sun and carefully studying the direction of the wind both during the dry season (to make the most of the natural air flow) and during the rainy season (to protect the facade from water infiltration).
The building consists of a simple steel structure custom-made near the site, the walls are made of local bricks covered with a natural lime plaster mixed with local red sand.
The roof insulation uses Vietnamese rice husks mixed with diatomaceous earth which helps prevent insects. Since rice husks are full of silicate, they are resistant to high humidity in the tropical climate.
All doors and windows are made of solid Vietnamese wood (thermo-wood for the deck) combined with bamboo mats, which are both inexpensive, water-resistant and allow the building's natural ventilation to be maintained.
The ramps and pergolas are made of Melaleuca wood (also native to South Vietnam and very water-resistant).
The solar water heater on the roof faces due south to be as efficient as possible and produce hot water when needed… This building is the perfect “manifesto” of a project in line with Happy and Creative Frugality adapted to tropical countries (campaign) – learn more at https://www.frugalite.org/fr/le-manifeste.html
